CHAPTER NINETEEN
After bidding Brine a good night, Griffin headed upstairs to the small room that was supposed to be his chambers for the night. He laid out things for the morning, tucked a dagger in his boot, strapped on his sword, and grabbed a book from his bag before returning for his watch. He positioned himself between Tomas and Franklin’s doors, and he could see Liora’s across the way as well. He wanted to see her and Sera, but he presumed they were likely already sleeping and did not want to disturb them. He hoped Tomas was resting as well.
Crouching down on his knees, he leaned back against the cold stone wall and opened the worn and faded book. It was a history of ancient kings and their dragons. It had been in Franklin’s solar, and he had given it to him to read. He was eager to read it and knew it would help the next few hours pass quickly.
He turned the page and began reading, losing himself in the history. He had read a good portion when he heard footsteps approaching. He closed the book and stood to attention, relaxing when he saw it was only Gerald.
“The time passed quicker than I realized,” Griffin admitted as Gerald reached him.
“A good book will do that.” Gerald held out his
pocket knife and a piece of wood. He carved
stunning figures in wood. “I thought I would
whittle it away myself.”
“The morning will be here before we know it.”
Griffin yawned then stretched his arms. He knew it
was going to be impossible to sneak past Gerald,
but he still wanted to keep his promise to Tomas.
Perhaps he could think of something.
“You should get some rest,” Gerald instructed,
his eyes kind. “You must be knackered.”
“I am,” Griffin admitted. “Good-night, I will see
you on the morrow.” He turned to leave.
“Where are you going?” Gerald asked in a near
whisper.
“To my chambers,” Griffin answered, though he
was confused.
“I thought...” Gerald pointed to Tomas’s door
then stepped forward so they could continue the
hushed conversation. “Tomas is weighed down
heavily right now with all the lies and secrets. You
should be with him.”
Gaping Griffin could not help but stare at
Gerald in shock. “I — um…you know?”
Seeming to bite back a laugh, Gerald looked at
him amusedly. “I have guarded Tomas since he
was in nursery. He is the son I never had, and I
love him like one, as I do you. I know you both
better than you think. I am surprised actually that it
took you so long to be together.”
Swallowing the lump in his throat and feeling
nervous, Griffin asked, “You are all right with
that?”
A heavy, yet gentle hand landed on his shoulder.
“Yes, for reasons I cannot say. I will admit, it first
made me uncomfortable. Now Lord Roland is my
lord and friend. He taught me acceptance over the
years. I was ignorant before then, and I regret some
mistakes in my past, but I will not repeat them. “Now, I am sure you and Tomas want to be
together and I fully support you. Plus it gives this
hardened and lonely heart of
